I’ve seen an announcement that my favorite CAD software Alias is turning 40 years old this year.
Well, let me raise a glass and toast to one of the enjoyable aspects of my lifelong passion for design.
Alias is my flow. It’s my playground. Sculpting surfaces to create flowing forms - that’s my happy place.
I was fortunate as a young designer to have mentors Greg and Wendy Volan at their Boulder consultancy who early saw the value of the (eye-wateringly expensive) 3D CAD software out of Canada. One seat plus the special SGI workstation required to run it surely cost more than my annual salary.
But what we were able to build with it year after year…well, that’s the stuff of a designer’s dreams.
I’ve since built my entire career around it, and thoroughly enjoy firing it up every day. I tip my hat to the mathematicians and coders who’ve been able to continuously improve the magic under the hood all this time.
So happy birthday, Alias. Cheers to the next 40!
